1A (A)gentle answer turns away wrath,
But a (B)harsh word stirs up anger.
2The (C)tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable,
But the (D)mouth of fools spouts folly.
3The (E)eyes of the LORD are in every place,
Watching the evil and the good.
4A soothing tongue is a tree of life,
But perversion in it crushes the spirit.
5A fool rejects his father's discipline,
But he who regards reproof is sensible.
6Great wealth is in the house of the (F)righteous,
But trouble is in the income of the wicked.
7The lips of the wise spread knowledge,
But the hearts of fools are not so.
8The (G)sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,
But (H)the prayer of the upright is His delight.
9The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,
But He loves one who (I)pursues righteousness.
10Grievous punishment is for him who forsakes the way;
He who hates reproof will die.
11(J)Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD,
How much more the (K)hearts of men!
12A (L)scoffer does not love one who reproves him,
He will not go to the wise.
13A (M)joyful heart makes a cheerful face,
But when the heart is (N)sad, the (O)spirit is broken.
14The (P)mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge,
But the mouth of fools feeds on folly.
15All the days of the afflicted are bad,
But a cheerful heart has a continual feast.
16(Q)Better is a little with the fear of the LORD
Than great treasure and turmoil with it.
17(R)Better is a dish of vegetables where love is
Than a (S)fattened ox served with hatred.
18A (T)hot-tempered man stirs up strife,
But the (U)slow to anger (V)calms a dispute.
19The way of the lazy is as a hedge of thorns,
But the path of the upright is a highway.
20A (W)wise son makes a father glad,
But a foolish man (X)despises his mother.
21Folly is joy to him who lacks sense,
But a man of understanding (Y)walks straight.
22Without consultation, plans are frustrated,
But with many counselors they succeed.
23A (Z)man has joy in an apt answer,
And how delightful is a timely (AA)word!
24The (AB)path of life leads upward for the wise
That he may keep away from Sheol below.
25The LORD will (AC)tear down the house of the proud,
But He will (AD)establish the boundary of the (AE)widow.
26Evil plans are an abomination to the LORD,
But pleasant words are pure.
27He who (AF)profits illicitly troubles his own house,
But he who (AG)hates bribes will live.
28The heart of the righteous (AH)ponders how to answer,
But the (AI)mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
29The LORD is (AJ)far from the wicked,
But He (AK)hears the prayer of the righteous.
12"This is (A)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.13"(B)Greater love has no one than this, that one (C)lay down his life for his friends. 14"You are My (D)friends if (E)you do what I command you. 15"No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (F)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16"(G)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and (H)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that (I)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17"This (J)I command you, that you love one another.
18"(K)If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.19"If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but (L)I chose you out of the world, (M)because of this the world hates you. 20"Remember the word that I said to you, '(N)A slave is not greater than his master ' If they persecuted Me, (O)they will also persecute you; if they (P)kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21"But all these things they will do to you (Q)for My name's sake, (R)because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22"(S)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23"He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24"(T)If I had not done among them (U)the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25"But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their (V)Law, '(W)THEY HATED ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.' 26"When the (X)Helper comes, (Y)whom I will send to you from the Father, that is (Z)the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (AA)He will testify about Me, 27and (AB)you will testify also, because you have been with Me (AC)from the beginning.
