Friday of Whitsunday (Feast of Pentecost)

First Reading: Num. 27:12-23

(A)Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up to this (B)mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel.

"When you have seen it, you too (C)will be gathered to your people, (D)as Aaron your brother was;

for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, (E)you rebelled against My command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

Joshua to Succeed Moses
Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying,

"(F)May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,

who (G)will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be (H)like sheep which have no shepherd."

So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man (I)in whom is the Spirit, and (J)lay your hand on him;

and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and (K)commission him in their sight.

"You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him.

"Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (L)by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his command they shall go out and at his command they shall come in, both he and the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation."

Moses did just as the LORD commanded him; and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.

Then he laid his hands on him and (M)commissioned him, just as the LORD had spoken through Moses.

Second Reading: Lk. 23:26-56

Simon Bears the Cross

(A)When they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of (B)Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were (C)mourning and lamenting Him.

But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

"For behold, the days are coming when they will say, '(D)Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'

"For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

(F)Two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

(G)When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.

But Jesus was saying, "(H)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing " (I)And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.

And the people stood by, looking on. And even the (J)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, "He saved others; (K)let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One."

The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, (L)offering Him sour wine,

and saying, "(M)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!"

Now there was also an inscription above Him, "(N)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

(O)One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? (P)Save Yourself and us!"

But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

"And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."

And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!"

And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in (Q)Paradise."

(R)It was now about [a](S)the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until [b]the ninth hour,

because the sun was obscured; and (T)the veil of the temple was torn in two.

And Jesus, (U)crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, (V)INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Having said this, He breathed His last.

(W)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (X)praising God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent."

And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, (Y)beating their breasts.

(Z)And all His acquaintances and (AA)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus Is Buried

(AB)And a man named Joseph, who was a (AC)member of the Council, a good and righteous man

(he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (AD)waiting for the kingdom of God;

this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.

It was (AE)the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

Now (AF)the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.

Then they returned and (AG)prepared spices and perfumes And (AH)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
