Collect (LSB)

O God, who gave Your Holy Spirit to the apostles, grant us that same Spirit that we may live in faith and abide in peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament (LSB): Isaiah 57:15-21

15For thus says(A) the One who is high and lifted up,
   who inhabits eternity, whose name is(B) Holy:(C) "I dwell in the high and holy place,
   and also(D) with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,(E) to revive the spirit of the lowly,
   and to revive the heart of the contrite. 16(F) For I will not contend forever,
   nor will I always be angry;for the spirit would grow faint before me,
   and the breath of life that I made. 17Because of the iniquity of his(G) unjust gain I was angry,
   I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,
   but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart. 18I have seen his ways,(H) but I will heal him;
   I will lead him(I) and restore comfort to him and his mourners,
 19(J) creating(K) the fruit of the lips.(L) Peace, peace,(M) to the far and to the near," says the LORD,
   (N) "and I will heal him. 20(O) But the wicked are like the tossing sea;
   for it cannot be quiet,
   and its waters toss up mire and dirt. 21(P) There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

Old Testament: Isaiah 32:14-20

14For the palace is forsaken,
   the populous city deserted;the hill and the watchtower
   will become dens forever,(A) a joy of wild donkeys,
   a pasture of flocks; 15until(B) the Spirit is poured upon us from on high,
   and(C) the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,
   and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. 16Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
   and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. 17(D) And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
   and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust[a] forever. 18My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
   in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. 19(E) And it will hail when the forest falls down,
   (F) and the city will be utterly laid low. 20(G) Happy are you who sow beside all waters,
   who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free.

Epistle: Acts 10:42-48

42And(A) he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify(B) that he is the one appointed by God to be judge(C) of the living and the dead. 43(D) To him(E) all the prophets bear witness that(F) everyone who believes in him receives(G) forgiveness of sins(H) through his name."

The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles
 44While Peter was still saying these things,(I) the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45And the believers from among(J) the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because(K) the gift of the Holy Spirit(L) was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46For they were hearing them(M) speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47(N) "Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit(O) just as we have?" 48And he(P) commanded them(Q) to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.

Gospel: John 3:16-21

For God So Loved the World

 16"For(A) God so loved(B) the world,[a](C) that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not(D) perish but have eternal life. 17For(E) God did not send his Son into the world(F) to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18(G) Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not(H) believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19(I) And this is the judgment:(J) the light has come into the world, and(K) people loved the darkness rather than the light because(L) their works were evil. 20(M) For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light,(N) lest his works should be exposed. 21But whoever(O) does what is true(P) comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A(A) Prayer of Moses, the(B) man of God.

 1Lord, you have been our(C) dwelling place[a]
   in all generations. 2(D) Before the(E) mountains were brought forth,
   or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
   (F) from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

 3You return man to dust
   and say,(G) "Return,(H) O children of man!"[b] 4For(I) a thousand years in your sight
   are but as(J) yesterday when it is past,
   or as(K) a watch in the night.

 5You(L) sweep them away as with a flood; they are like(M) a dream,
   like(N) grass that is renewed in the morning: 6in(O) the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
   in the evening it(P) fades and(Q) withers.

 7For we are brought to an end by your anger;
   by your wrath we are dismayed. 8You have(R) set our iniquities before you,
   our(S) secret sins in the light of your presence.

 9For all our days pass away under your wrath;
   we bring our years to an end like a sigh. 10The years of our life are seventy,
   or even by reason of strength eighty;yet their span[c] is but toil and trouble;
   they are soon gone, and we fly away. 11Who considers the power of your anger,
   and your wrath according to the fear of you?

 12(T) So teach us to number our days
   that we may get a heart of wisdom. 13(U) Return, O LORD!(V) How long?
   Have(W) pity on your servants! 14Satisfy us in the(X) morning with your steadfast love,
   that we may(Y) rejoice and be glad all our days. 15Make us glad for as many days as you have(Z) afflicted us,
   and for as many years as we have seen evil. 16Let your(AA) work be shown to your servants,
   and your glorious power to their children. 17Let the(AB) favor[d] of the Lord our God be upon us,
   and establish(AC) the work of our hands upon us;
   yes, establish the work of our hands!

Balak Summons Balaam
 1Then(A) the people of Israel set out and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho. 2And(B) Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3And(C) Moab was in great dread of the people, because they were many. Moab was overcome with fear of the people of Israel. 4And Moab said to(D) the elders of Midian, "This horde will now lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field." So Balak the son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5(E) sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor(F) at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the people of Amaw,[a] to call him, saying, "Behold, a people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are dwelling opposite me. 6(G) Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed."

 7So the elders of Moab and(H) the elders of Midian departed with(I) the fees for divination in their hand. And they came to Balaam and gave him Balak’s message. 8And he said to them, "Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the LORD speaks to me." So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9(J) And God came to Balaam and said, "Who are these men with you?" 10And Balaam said to God, "Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11'Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Now come, curse them for me. Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.'" 12God said to Balaam, "You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people, for(K) they are blessed." 13So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, "Go to your own land, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you." 14So the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak and said, "Balaam refuses to come with us."

 15Once again Balak sent princes, more in number and more honorable than these. 16And they came to Balaam and said to him, "Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: 'Let nothing hinder you from coming to me, 17(L) for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do.(M) Come, curse this people for me.'" 18But Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak,(N) "Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold,(O) I could not go beyond the command of the LORD my God to do less or more. 19So you, too,(P) please stay here tonight, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me." 20(Q) And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, rise, go with them;(R) but only do what I tell you."

The Law of the LORD Is Perfect

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

 1(A) The heavens declare the glory of God,
   and the sky above[a] proclaims his handiwork. 2Day to day pours out speech,
   and night to night reveals knowledge. 3There is no speech, nor are there words,
   whose voice is not heard. 4(B) Their(C) voice[b] goes out through all the earth,
   and their words to the end of the world.In them he has set a tent for(D) the sun,
 5(E) which comes out like(F) a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
   and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
   and its circuit to the end of them,
   and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

 7(G) The law of the LORD is perfect,[c]
   (H) reviving the soul;(I) the testimony of the LORD is(J) sure,
   (K) making wise(L) the simple; 8(M) the precepts of the LORD are right,
   rejoicing the heart;the commandment of the LORD is(N) pure,
   (O) enlightening the eyes; 9the fear of the LORD is clean,
   enduring forever;the rules[d] of the LORD are(P) true,
   and righteous altogether. 10More to be desired are they than(Q) gold,
   even much(R) fine gold;(S) sweeter also than honey
   and drippings of(T) the honeycomb. 11Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
   (U) in keeping them there is great reward.

 12(V) Who can discern his errors?
   (W) Declare me innocent from(X) hidden faults. 13(Y) Keep back your servant also from(Z) presumptuous sins;
   let them not have(AA) dominion over me!Then I shall be blameless,
   and innocent of great transgression.

 14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
   be acceptable in your sight,
   O LORD, my(AB) rock and my(AC) redeemer.

The Plot to Kill Jesus
 1(A) Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called(B) the Passover. 2And the chief priests and the scribes(C) were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.
Judas to Betray Jesus
 3(D) Then(E) Satan entered into(F) Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4He went away and conferred with the chief priests and(G) officers how he might betray him to them. 5And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6So he consented and sought an opportunity to(H) betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.
The Passover with the Disciples
 7(I) Then came(J) the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it." 9They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?" 10He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11and tell the master of the house,(K) 'The Teacher says to you, Where is(L) the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' 12And he will show you(M) a large upper room furnished; prepare it there." 13And they went and found it(N) just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
 14(O) And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you I will not eat it[b](P) until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 17And he took a cup, and(Q) when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18(R) For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine(S) until the kingdom of God comes." 19(T) And he took bread, and(U) when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, (V) "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 20And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, (W) "This cup that is poured out for you is(X) the new(Y) covenant in my blood.[c] 21(Z) But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is(AA) with me on the table. 22For the Son of Man goes(AB) as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" 23And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.
